Thanks for adding this comment Chippy – it’s brilliant! Any more you could share about John Miller, Stan Willets and the electricians, or Dennis Callaghan and the Stores Office would be great! I take it John would have been part of Fielding’s maintenance and painting outfit? Also, who were the “Spares Gang” and what did they do?!
The photo of the press was taken in Hydraulic 2. I don’t know anything about the actual machine as it was before my time. What I can tell you is that on the right-hand side of the photo you can see a man painting the base of an H3 pump. He is painting the inside of the water cooling part of the base. The painter could be John Miller, but I can’t be sure as this photo was taken 8 years before I started at F&P, and also he has moved his head as the photo was being taken.
To the left of the press is an H3 pump base which looks like it is ready for painting, too, and once that was done and dry it would be fitted to the main pump body and tightened down onto a gasket.
The other side of the gangway you can see some steps, these took you up to the Electricians’ department, which in my day was run by Stan Willets.
To the left of the stairs was the entrance to a stores area, and to the right of the stairs you can see the windows of the Stores Office, in my day, run by Dennis Callaghan.
I’m not sure about the man standing behind the small truck, maybe a crane driver or the driver of the truck? Also I can’t tell who the other man is because he is moving at the time the photo was taken. He could be part of the “spares gang” as they were in that position in the workshop. Chippy Aston
