Ken Daniell remembers being interviewed by Bill Thomas in September 1940 and explains what he would have to do for the Chief Draughstman as the junior apprentice

In these short clips, Dennis Norman and Ken Daniell remember Bill Thomas, the Head of the Drawing Office in the late 1930s and early 1940s.

Dennis remembers he was a “very tall and very straight man” and certainly “a great disciplinarian”.

“He had a big two feet long two inch diameter ebony circular ruler, and which if you weren’t holding the pen correctly or if you were doing something else he didn’t like he cracked you over the knuckles with”

This speeded learning and ensured that good order was kept.

Ken recalls what Bill asked him in his interview and what he would have to do for Bill as his latest junior apprentice.
