Historic Blue Plaques officially unveiled at Gloucester Quays Designer Outlet

Fitting commemoration of Gloucester's Atlas Works

At 2.00pm on Friday 7th March 2014 the plaque sited adjacent to the Information Point at the St Ann’s Way entrance was officially unveiled.

The plaques commemorate the heritage of the site of Fielding and Platt’s Atlas Works, one of Gloucester’s great pioneering engineering firms. Their presence will ensure that this firm  will be remembered by future generations. Fielding and Platt launched the careers of hundreds of engineers in an around Gloucester, a company dear to the hearts of many in the city and beyond.

Thanks must be given to Gloucester City Council, Gloucester Historic Buildings Ltd , Gloucester Quays and finally, Gloucestershire Archives for their co operation

Approximately 100 people attended. As well as a great number of ex-employees and their relations, as well as members of the Fielding family and the Platt family were in attendance.

All were welcomed by Mr Richard Rawlings, the manager at Gloucester Quays. Next, Councillor Colin Organ (also a former Fielding employee) made a short speech. Finally, Mr Brian Mince, one time industrial photographer with the company and one of the small band of volunteers working to continue the Fielding and Platt History project, made a short speech which ended by his inviting Mrs Elsie Lane and Mr Bob Madeley to unveil the plaque.

This they did and after a short photographic session everyone adjourned to The Civic Suite in the North Warehouse at Gloucester Docks at the kind invitation of Gloucester City Council. Tea, coffee and biscuits were available. Here many old acquaintances were renewed and a pleasant time was enjoyed by all.
